ACU rural scholarship honours Archbishop Carroll

The Australian Catholic University's Francis Carroll Scholarship has been founded to mark the Archbishop's retirement and his contribution to Canberra and rural NSW.

The scholarship will provide much-needed financial support to students from rural communities in NSW and ACT who face particular economic challenges.

"Archbishop Francis Carroll was passionate about the welfare of rural and regional areas and this scholarship honours his tireless work in a long-lasting and practical way," said Professor Peter Camilleri, Rector of ACU National, Canberra Campus. "The rising cost of tertiary education presents obstacles to many prospective university students, but those from rural areas are often particularly affected."

An ACU statement quotes Therese Rodway (pictured), an ACU graduate from Temora in north-west NSW. Having completed the Duel Honours Degree in Theology and Social Work at ACU National's Canberra Campus, she was awarded an ACU fellowship to study for a Postgraduate Certificate in Interfaith Relations.

"The main problem for students from rural areas is the travel expense associated with living away from home," she said. "I had to hold down three jobs just to make ends meet, so when I received a fellowship to study for a graduate certificate, it came as a huge relief. For young people in rural areas, studying provides an opportunity to widen their horizons and make choices they might otherwise not have the chance to make. Scholarships, such as the Francis Carroll Scholarship, really help young people in rural areas to branch out and experience new things."

ACU National has provided the scholarship with seed funding and initial donations have been received from Jim Murphy of Jim Murphy's Cellars, and the Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn.

ACU National has launched an appeal to raise additional funds to help more students. Members of the public concerned about rural welfare, or who simply want to express their gratitude to the Archbishop, are encouraged to make a tax-deductible donation. The money raised will be held by GreaterGood (Capital Regional Community Foundation), a Canberra-based charitable trust that supports local philanthropic causes.
