Jesuits and companions begin Jubilee Year with assembly
The Jubilee Year of St Ignatius, St Francis Xavier and Blessed Peter Favre was launched this week at a two-day gathering at Newman College at the University of Melbourne.
2006 marks the 450th anniversary of the death of Ignatius, the Jesuits' founder, as well as the 500th anniversary of the birth of mission legend St Francis Xavier, and early spiritual guide Blessed Peter Favre.
The Jesuits' Australian website reports that 200 Jesuits and their associates in ministry heard many accounts of planning in the Province.
Provincial Fr Mark Raper offered an overview of Society and the Australian Province.
A local version of a DVD on the three early Jesuits, and Jesuit works around the world, was shown at the Gathering.
The meeting allowed those present to listen to descriptions of how the province plan is being implemented in the various ministries.
Fr Raper spoke about the recent meeting of Provincials in Loyola, the birthplace of St. Ignatius, which was the first of a series of significant Jesuit meetings in coming years.
During the meeting, participants had the opportunity to visit some of the local Jesuit works.
