Death of New Zealand's first Maori bishop
Bishop Takuira Max Mariu, a respected leader of the Maori Catholic community, died in Auckland on Monday night at the age of 53.
TVNZ reports taht Bishop Mariu, who had suffered from coronary problems, was ordained to the priesthood in 1977 and became the country's first Catholic Maori Bishop in 1988.
The Bishop of Hamilton Denis Browne says the whole Catholic community is saddened by the sudden death, describing it as a great loss for the diocese of Aotearoa.
Bishop Mariu will be taken to Turangawaewae Marae in Ngaruawahia, then to Hamilton's Saint Mary's Cathedral for a Requiem Mass.
Meanwhile the Hobart Archdiocese has announced funeral arrangements for the late Archbishop Eric D'Arcy. There will be a concelebrated Requiem Mass in St Patrick's Cathedral, Melbourne, at 7:30 pm on Friday. The Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial will then take place at 11:00 am on Monday in St Mary's Cathedral, Hobart. The Burial will take place in the grounds of St Mary's Cathedral at the conclusion of the Mass.
Archbishop D'Arcy died in Melbourne on Monday morning at the age of 81.
