Pope condemns Jordan hotel terrorist bombings
Pope Benedict XVI has spoken out against Wednesday's terrorist bombings of three hotels in the Jordanian capital of Amman, offering his prayers for the victims, and for those working for peace in the Middle East.
Catholic News Service reports that the Holy Father expressed his condolences in a telegram to King Abdullah II yesterday.
At least 56 people died and more than 300 people were injured when bombs went off almost simultaneously just before 9:00 pm local time at the Grand Hyatt, Radisson and Days Inn hotels.
The terrorist group al-Qaida claimed responsibility for the blasts in a message posted on a website yesterday.
Cardinal Angelo Sodano, Vatican secretary of state, told Jordan's king in the telegram: "Deeply saddened to learn of the cruel acts of violence and disrespect for law and human life perpetrated in the city of Amman, the Holy Father sends heartfelt condolences to your majesty, to the families of the deceased and to the entire nation."
Cardinal Sodano also said, "The Holy Father invokes the divine gifts of consolation upon all those who mourn and unfailing courage upon all who work for lasting peace and respect for human rights in the Middle East."
