Wollongong site to help fund new cathedral
The NSW Diocese of Wollongong will investigate commercial uses for church land to help fund a new cathedral in the city.
The Illawarra Mercury reports that a master plan for the St Francis Xavier's Cathedral precinct will earmark a site for a new cathedral, look at options for a new primary school building and consider underground parking.
The existing heritage-listed cathedral is to be retained, with a non-liturgical use.
Commercial applications for the site, particularly valuable school land, will also be nominated to help the church realise the site's value and pay for development.
The church is seeking expressions of interest from urban designers to draft the master plan.
