Pope blesses cornerstone of new Sydney Seminary

In the presence of Cardinal George Pell, Pope Benedict XVI has blessed the cornerstone of the future Redemptoris Mater seminary of the NeoCatechumenal Way in Sydney.

Zenit reports that the seminary's rector, Fr Erich Skruznyd, was also present at the Rome ceremony.

Currently, the international diocesan centre of formation has 20 candidates for the priesthood, according to Vatican Radio.

There are some 50 Redemptoris Mater seminaries worldwide, with 1500 seminarians. More than 1000 graduates of these seminaries have been ordained to the priesthood.

According to its statutes, the Neocatechumenal Way is "at the service of diocesan bishops and parish priests as a way of discovering the sacrament of baptism, and of continuing education in the faith."

The Neocatechumenal Way is present in more than 900 dioceses. While it is best known for its efforts in the Redfern, Sydney, parish of the late Fr Ted Kennedy, its strongest presence in Australia is in Perth. The movement also has a seminary in Perth. One of its co-founders, Kiko ArgŁello, is an auditor in the current Synod of Bishops on the Eucharist.
