Papal envoy arrives in Katrina stricken area

Archbishop Paul Josef Cordes, the president of the 'Cor Unum' Pontifical Society, continues his tour of visit to people suffering from the effects of Hurricane Katrina in the USA.

CLICK HEREcatholicireland.net reports that, on his arrival, he met the Bishop Robert Muench of the local diocese and the president of the Catholic Charities USA, Fr Larry Snyder.

On Sunday, he concelebrated Mass in the St Joseph's Cathedral of Baton Rouge, when the victims of the natural catastrophe and all the victims of violence were remembered on the fourth anniversary of 11 September 2001. Joining him were the Archbishop Alfred Hughes of New Orleans, Archbishop Oscar Lipscomb of Mobile, Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, archbishop of Washington, D.C., retired Archbishop Philip Hannan of New Orleans and Bishop Robert Muench of Baton Rouge.

He also met the other bishops of the area as well as the Governor of Louisiana. The group also visited the displaced of the Mississippi delta sheltered in Baton Rouge and spoke to the numerous people engaged in the rescue efforts.

Archbishop Cordes also hopes to tour hurricane-ravaged areas by helicopter on Monday, and then visit the Diocese of Biloxi. He will go to Washington DC on Tuesday to meet with federal authorities. He is due to return to the Vatican on September 14.

Before the catastrophe, which may have left thousands dead, New Orleans was an archdiocese of one and a half million people, more than a third of them practising Catholics. Now the city, which makes up about half the archdiocese, is virtually empty. At this stage it is not certain if any priests are among the victims of the storm, the flooding, or the resulting anarchy.

Last week, US President George Bush announced that 16 September is to be the "National Day of Prayer and Remembrance for the Victims of Hurricane Katrina."
