Report clears Canberra's Calvary Health Care
Speaking after the release of a ACT Government report that dismissed fraud charges at Calvary Health Care (CHC), Catholic Health Australia CEO Francis Sullivan said: "We are delighted, yet not surprised".
Mr Sullivan said that the report has cleared "the good name of Calvary from any suggestion of inappropriate billing or fraud".
The inquiry followed a Canberra Times report in July that independent auditors were investigating staff claims that health funds were being charged for the treatment of public patients.
"Despite media suggestions to the contrary Calvary Health Care has been vindicated by the report and its management and governance structures deserve commendation," he added. "The Board and management at CHC have had to withstand a barrage of unsubstantiated allegations, some of which were given undue attention by the media. This report clearly demonstrates the integrity and competency of CHC management and governance and reaffirms their credibility with the community."
Mr Sullivan said that the most disturbing aspect of yesterday's announcement was that some allegations are still being made, even though they have been demonstrated to be incorrect.
"Since CHC management comments were not included in the report, it is fortunate that they are publicly available and that they reflect the commitment to transparency which goes hand in hand with the ethos of CHC," he said. "Catholic public hospitals have been the foundation of the country's hospital system. We are proud of that tradition and it continues today through 19 public hospitals across Australia."
