India marks Blessed Mother Teresa's death anniversary

CLICK HEREFollowers lit candles and sang prayers at the Mother's House in Kolkata, with hundreds visiting her tomb and attending Mass in her honour, on yesterday's eighth anniversary of her death.

The Catholic Bishops Conference of India reports that special prayers were offered in all the houses of the Missionaries of Charity around the world. The superior general of Missionaries of Charity Sister Nirmala said that, in the future, Mother Teresa's death anniversary will be observed as the official Feast Day as declared by the Vatican.

Mother Teresa, who died on 5 September, 1997, was popularly known as the "saint of the gutters" for her extraordinary love and dedication to the poor, the homeless and sick people. She received several national and international awards for her dedicated service during her lifetime. They include Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award in India, the Magsaysay Award in 1962, the Pope John XXIII Peace Prize in 1971, the John F. Kennedy International Award in 1971 and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979.

In October 2003, Pope John Paul II beatified Mother Teresa, taking her to the final step before she could be declared a saint. The beatification acclaimed the popular nun to be called the Blessed Teresa of Kolkata.
