Pope says ecumenism obligatory for all Christians

CLICK HEREPope Benedict XVI has told an ecumenical assembly, organised by the Franciscans in Assisi, that Christian unity "must be the objective of all those who profess faith in the Church".

Catholic World News reports that Cardinal Walter Kasper, the president of the Pontifical Council for Christian Unity, read the Pope's message to the opening session of the 9th Inter-Christian Symposium, which brings together Catholic and Orthodox scholars for talks that will focus this year on the Eucharist in the eastern and western Christian traditions.

Noting the timely topic for discussions during the Year of the Eucharist, the Holy Father said that the desire to achieve full communion, and share the Eucharistic banquet, should inspire Christians "to intensify prayer, study, and dialogue with the aim of resolving the differences" that separate them.

He added: "The search for full and visible unity among all Christ's disciples is a particularly urgent need of our times."

The Inter-Christian Symposium is joingly hosted by the Antonianum Pontifical University in Rome and the Aristotle University in Thessalonica, Greece. Meetings alternate between locations in Italy and Greece.
