Pope meets controversial author

Pope Benedict XVI has held a private, unannounced meeting with an Italian journalist and author whose controversial comments on Islam have enraged some Muslim groups.

Catholic News Service reports that Oriana Fallaci, whose books include "The Rage and the Pride" and "The Force of Reason," met with the Holy Father last weekend at his summer residence in Castel Gandolfo, south of Rome.

The confidential meeting was picked up by the Italian media three days later when reports emerged on Tuesday that Fallaci, who lives in New York, had been received by the pope at her request. Though the meeting had not been announced, the Vatican press office confirmed the following day that it did occur.

The press office said it did not know what Fallaci and the pope discussed. Fallaci, who is suffering from cancer, faces trial next June in Italy on charges of defaming Islam; the case was brought by the head of the Muslim Union of Italy, Adel Smith.
