Caritas giving aid to flood-stricken India

Caritas Australia is accepting donations to assist its effort to help victims of the recent floods in India, where the death is believed to have risen to more than 1400.

Areas of North-Western India were swept by monsoon flooding over the past two months. A Caritas statement released on Friday says that heavy rains began in the state of Gujurat, where more than 130 people were killed and 500,000 people were evacuated. By early July, the floods had also affected the states of Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Kashmir and Jammu . By mid July, the monsoon rains had moved west towards Goa and Maharashtra states.

The financial hub of Mumbai saw its communication lines, trade and transport infrastructure crippled by the surging water levels. On 26 July, the highest rainfall in a single day was recorded in Mumbai, where the water levels reached 94.4cm.

Over 25 million people have been affected by the disaster. With water and mud damage widespread, many of those affected in low-lying areas have lost everything. There are fears the death toll could rise even higher as cases of water borne diseases such as cholera, gastroenteritis and dysentery are reported across the affected areas.

The Indian Government has estimated that the damage bill in Maharashtra state alone will be at least $3.5 billion.

Caritas Australia is supporting the immediate relief response, such as food distribution, through its network partner, Caritas India.

Caritas Australia also is supporting a two year, three-stage program through Caritas India , where relief and rehabilitation will be provided. The program will focus on disaster preparedness assistance, so that future emergencies will not have such a devastating impact on vulnerable communities in India .

The freecall number for those who wish to make a donation is 1800 024 413.
