Notre Dame Sydney Medical School to open in 2008

CLICK HERENotre Dame University's Board yesterday approved February 2008 as the opening date for the University's Sydney Medical School, in line with the recommendation of the Australian Medical Council (AMC).

A statement from the University says the plans for a private medical school in Sydney will adopt the successful model that led to the formation of the University's Medical School in Fremantle, which opened this year.

Notre Dame's Vice Chancellor, Dr Peter Tannock, says the Sydney timeframe will ensure that the major facilities to be developed on the University's Darlinghurst site (the Sacred Heart Parish opposite St Vincent's Healthcare Campus) are ready and fully operational, and that necessary agreements on clinical training with hospitals and other health care providers are in place.

"The University will invest more than $16M to restore the historic buildings on the Darlinghurst site, including a new building to house its Medical and Nursing Schools. The Darlinghurst facilities will be completed by mid 2007.

"Notre Dame will seek approval from the appropriate consent authority to commence construction as soon as possible.

"The University will work closely with the AMC Secretariat, and the AMC accreditation team which has been appointed to oversee the Sydney Medical School accreditation process,' Dr Tannock said.

Notre Dame will open its Broadway Campus in February 2006, with initial courses in Arts, Business, Education, Nursing and Law. Nursing will move to the Darlinghurst site as soon as its facilities are completed in 2007.

Dr Tannock said, "Both campuses will provide state-of-the-art facilities and be places of great beauty which reflect their heritage and the special character of Notre Dame.

Dr Tannock also indicated that the University would be proceeding with the development of its proposed Clinical Medical School in Melbourne, which will provide clinical placement for some students from both the Sydney and Fremantle Medical Schools.

"The Melbourne Clinical Medical School will enable the University to pursue its approved goal of supporting Medical Education in South-East Australia, especially in the Catholic health care system.

"The Melbourne Clinical School will open in 2007, subject to AMC accreditation, and would receive an intake of students from the Fremantle program. It is proposed that Notre Dame's Melbourne Clinical School would be centred in a number of leading Catholic and public hospitals in Victoria,' Dr Tannock said

The Minister for Education, Science and Training, Dr Brendan Nelson has approved the timetable for Notre Dame's Sydney Medical School.
