Jesuit social ethicist lecturing on global common good

CLICK HEREFr David Hollenbach, social commentator and writer based at Boston College in the USA will speak on the topic The Global Common Good in a Divided World, this week at the Australian Catholic University in Sydney tonight.

Professor Hollenbach's lecture is part of a three-city tour. Tonight's event is at ACU's North Sydney campus (MacKillop), in the Leone Ryan Auditorium, 40 Edward Street, North Sydney at 6pm for 6.30pm. He will be in Canberra tomorrow, and Melbourne on Thursday (details below)

Professor Hollenbach will propose that the Catholic tradition's stress on the common good, social solidarity and justice has important influence on emerging interdependent economic, social and cultural forms of globalisation.

"We need a vision of justice that maintains that every person counts, and that all have a moral claim to participate in the economic, political, and cultural life of their communities at least to the level needed to protect the most basic requirements of human dignity," argues Professor Hollenbach. "Injecting a vision of justice such as this into the current debates about economic relations in a globalising world could be one of the chief contributions we can make to the debates about globalisation today."

Professor Hollenbach is Director of the Centre for Human Rights and International Justice at Boston College where he teaches theological ethics and Christian social ethics. He assisted the US Conference of Catholic Bishops in drafting their 1986 pastoral letter, Economic Justice for All: Catholic Social Teaching and the US Economy, and in 1998 received the John Courtney Murray Award for outstanding contributions to theology from the Catholic Theological Society of America.

ACU National Vice-Chancellor, Professor Peter Sheehan AO will Chair the lecture. Respondents include ACU National's Institute of Legal Studies, Professor Frank Brennan SJ AO and Professor of Philosophy at the Catholic Institute of Sydney, Reverend Dr Gerald Gleeson.

Tonight's lecture is being presented in association with Australian Jesuits, and is jointly sponsored by the Uniya Jesuit Social Justice Centre.

At ACU National's Canberra Campus, on tomorrow evening (6pm for 6.30pm), Professor Hollenbach will speak on Humanitarian Crises, Refugees and the Transnational Good: Global Challenges and Catholic Social Teaching which has Catholic Health Australia as joint sponsor.

At ACU National's Melbourne Campus, on Thursday (6pm for 6.30pm), Professor Hollenbach will speak on Human Rights and Women's Rights: Universal Standards in a Multicultural World?, jointly sponsored by the Jesuit Theological College.
