ACU ranks high for "good teaching"
In a survey of graduates from 37 of Australia's universities, the Australian Catholic University has come in eight for "good teaching".
A statement from the university said that the figure is contained in the recently released report, Graduate Course Experience 2004, by Graduate Careers Australia, GCA.
The information was added to other data from GCA and the Department of Education, Science and Training, DEST, and adjusted to reflect student backgrounds, to compile a controversial new ranking for universities, the Student Outcome Indicators for the Learning and Teaching Performance Fund, expected to be used to tie funding to university performance.
"We are very pleased that our students have graded their ACU National lecturers so highly in terms of their teaching," said ACU National Vice-Chancellor Professor Peter Sheehan AO. "Quality matters, and we have worked very hard to build on our successes since our very successful Australian Universities Quality Assurance audit two years ago."
"Our University contributes significantly to the professions through its relevant, quality teaching, research, community engagement and highly valued graduates in education, health and social sciences, business and the arts."
Professor Sheehan said that although some aspects of a university education could be measured, rated and ranked, others could not. These qualities may be less tangible, though no less important.
"ACU National empowers its students and staff with a strong sense of social responsibility and individual concern for the moral and ethical dimensions of their fields of study, professional activities and their lives."
In another recent report on Australia's universities, the recently-released Good Universities Guide 2006, ACU National received a five-star rating for both staff-student ratios and staff qualifications, with graduates rating their educational experience at ACU National above average, and student demand for places at ACU National also above average.
