Pope death stunt rattles rugby player
A home side loudspeaker announcement that the Pope had died in a car crash put off the kicker in a New Zealand Catholic rugby team as he tried to kick a penalty goal that would have won the match.
Rugbyheaven.com.au reports that Paddy Rimene, the Marist club's star kicker, was lining up the penalty in the last minutes of a local cup semi-final against Gladstone with the score 10-10, Wellington's Dominion Post reported.
As his kick hit the goalpost and bounced back, the announcer said the Pope was in fact fine and that the car accident was minor.
Rimene said he was not Catholic but told the paper that he was "really annoyed".
"I should have blocked it out," he said.
