Mixed response to WA church ads

The Catholic Archdiocese of Perth took out a half-page, $6000 advertisement in Friday and Saturday's West Australian newspaper last week (paid for by a generous parishioner) and is planning television ads.

The ad bears a picture of Pope John Paul II and a message from Perth Archbishop Barry Hickey urging people that "the church loves you and we want you to come back home".

According to ABC News, Archbishop Hickey says the newspaper advertisements have attracted some angry responses.

Perth's Archbishop Barry Hickey says church members have been drifting away for over 20 years, and it is not always known why. He says the Church has received calls from some people who were grateful for the advertisements, but others were angry.

"Some left under difficult circumstances, feeling insulted or feeling abused by somebody," he said.

"We want to be reconciled with them.

"We're glad they've phoned and we'll do our best to sort out what the matters are so that we can all be one again."
