Popetown spoof for screening on NZ TV
Plans to screen controversial cartoon sitcom Popetown, based on Vatican office politics, is expected to spark interest and outrage among Catholics in New Zealand.
The channel C4 will premiere the program next Wednesday at 9:30 pm.
It is based on Vatican office politics and depicts a less than charming pope and an array of characters, including corrupt cardinals. It features the voices of Ruby Wax and Jerry Hall.
Spokesman for the Catholic organisation Family Life International Brendan Malone says the program is offensive and nothing more than an intolerant derision of Catholic beliefs.
He says the BBC, which originally commissioned the program, has chosen not to screen it because of the offence it would cause the country's Catholics.
