Pastoral plan update for Sydney priests
Priests of the Archdiocese of Sydney were given an update on the development of a diocesan pastoral plan at their clergy conference last week.
The Catholic Weekly reports that Bishop Julian Porteous, chairman of the archdiocesan renewal planning committee, presented a review of the work to date of the committee set up by the Archbishop of Sydney, Cardinal George Pell, following clergy forums in 2003 and 2004 recommended the preparation of a pastoral plan.
Bishop Porteous outlined in his presentation to the priests that the committee comprised clergy, religious and laity - Mons Vince Redden, Frs Fr John Usher, Geoff Plant and Dominic Ceresoli; Danny Casey; Anthony Cleary; Sr Philomene Tiernan; Peter Turner; Marita Winters and Selina Hashm
The committee's charter is to develop a pastoral plan outlining a set of goals and priorities for parishes and agencies of the archdiocese with the aim of strengthening Catholic life and responding to changing circumstances.
The committee first met in February and began discussing the most appropriate framework for developing the pastoral plan and determining the key success measures.
It will work towards presenting a draft pastoral plan identifying areas for action to a Sydney archdiocesan assembly next year.
Bishop Porteous emphasised the process adopted by the committee was one which provided for consultation and participation.
"Currently, the committee has drafted a preliminary mission statement and objectives," he said. "These were presented to the priests of the archdiocese, being the first of many groups to be involved in the planning process.
"Key to the development of the pastoral plan is the determination of key stakeholders, the many groups that contribute to the life of the archdiocese.
Meanwhile in Sydney this morning, Cardinal George Pell will officiate at the commencement of building works and re-dedication ceremony for Notre Dame's St Benedict's Campus in inner city Broadway.
