Benedict tells motorists to drive carefully
Speaking during his regular Sunday Angelus audience this week, Pope Benedict XVI urged holidaymakers to drive carefully.
Noting that the end of June marks the beginning of the summer holiday season in the northern hemisphere, the Holy Father said: "While I hope that everyone can peacefully enjoy some well-earned rest and relaxation, I would like to make an appeal for prudence for all those who are starting their trips to vacation areas."
The end of this week is also the beginning of the short winter break for schools in many parts of Australia.
Recognising improvements in road safety, the Holy Father observed that distracted driving remains a serious problem. Catholic World News reports that he reminded his listeners that "in a single moment", a careless driver "can ruin his own life and that of others."
"Life is previous and unique: it must be respected and protected at all times - particularly by proper, prudent conduct on the roads," the Pope said. He added that he would confide holiday travellers to the care of the Virgin Mary.
Pope Benedict will take his own two and a half week vacation in Valle d'Aosta, in the Italian Alps, in a fortnight from yesterday. After the mountain stay, he will rest and work at the papal summer residence in Castel Gandolfo through the remaining weeks of the summer - except for his trip to Cologne for World Youth Day. The Vatican has not yet announced when the Pope will return to the Vatican.
At the close of his Sunday audience, as he gave his greetings to the various groups in St. Peter's Square, the Pope again mentioned the beginning of the vacation season. In his last words to the crowd - which braved a hot, sunny day in Rome - he said: "Have a good Sunday and a good vacation."
