Commission urges support for National Day of Healing

Brisbane's Catholic Justice and Peace Commission is encouraging Catholics to participate in the National Day of Healing (formerly National Sorry Day) on Thursday 26 May.

In a statement issued today, the Archdiocesan Commission's Executive Officer, Peter Arndt, said he hopes Catholics will become active in promoting healing of the pain caused by the practice of forcibly removing Indigenous children from their families in the last century.

The Commission has worked with a number of groups to organise a commemorative ceremony at the Stolen Generations Plaque in Brisbane's King George Square this Saturday at 5.30 pm.

Mr Arndt, said that an evening vigil would be held at the memorial plaque each day from the ceremony until the National Day of Healing itself on 26 May.

"The Commission welcomes the National Sorry Day Committee's initiative in re-orienting Stolen Generations activity towards a focus on the need for healing," Mr Arndt said.

"Only a fraction of the 1996 Bringing Them Home Report was implemented and, yet, the pain caused by the forcible removal of thousands of Indigenous children in the 20th Century is still evident within the Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities," he said.

"Catholics need to be a part of a concerted public effort to promote healing for all of us," he said.

The Commission is working with a number of groups which include Churches Together Indigenous Peoples Partnership, Reconciliation Queensland Inc, the Sisters of Mercy and Australians for Native Title and Reconciliation.

There will also be a number of dawn ceremonies held on the National Day of Healing at memorial plaques in various Brisbane suburbs and a day of activities in the Roma Street Parklands.
