Catholic University appoints Professor of Ageing

The Australian Catholic University (ACU National) has appointed a Professor of Ageing (Veterans and Community), who will commence work on 16 May at its North Sydney (MacKillop) campus.

Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Gabrielle McMullen, last week named Dr Tracey McDonald to the role.

Dr McDonald comes to ACU National from the Australian Nursing Homes and Extended Care Association NSW, where she held the position of Manager of Research, Policy and Professional Services. Her professional academic qualifications including, a Doctor of Philosophy, cover the areas of public health, health administration and management, nursing education and midwifery.

"I am delighted to welcome Dr McDonald to this key role," said Professor McMullen. "She brings to us outstanding experience in aged and community care and is closely involved with aged care issues arising from Federal and State legislation and policy related to the aged care sector."

"Dr McDonald's appointment will provide excellent opportunities for collaboration between the RSL Veterans' Retirement Village, the sponsors of this Chair, and the University, particularly the Faculty of Health Sciences. Collaboration will focus on nursing in aged care and the community, and innovation in nursing practice," said Professor McMullen.

"The University will benefit strongly from Dr McDonald's 40 years experience in the nursing environment in education, research and practice development. She will extend the base of research and scholarship and assist ACU National's students to attain world class practice," said Professor McMullen. "Her leadership skills will be highly valued by the University."

Dr McDonald has established a local and international scholarship profile through participation in professional conferences and associations. She has experience in multidisciplinary research, has held various leadership roles and has supervised both graduate student and staff projects. Dr McDonald's substantial academic teaching performance earned her the University of Wollongong Vice-Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching for innovative and effective approaches to teaching and learning.

The launch of the appointment took place recently at the RSL War Veterans Club in Narrabeen in Sydney.
