Pope commends 'beauty' of Sunday

Pope Benedict XVI has stressed the importance of Sunday Mass, letting it be known that "every parish is called to rediscover the beauty of Sunday, the Lord's day".

Catholic World News reports the words of the Holy Father during his Angelus audience on Sunday.

Directing a specific message to those participating in Italy's national Eucharistic Congress taking place in the eastern coastal city of Bari, Benedict said that Sundays are especially important during the current Year of the Eucharist.

"In the heart of this year dedicated to the Eucharist, the Christian people gather around Christ, who is present in the most holy Sacrament, the source and summit of her life and mission," he said.

Pope Benedict said that he was looking forward to his own trip to Bari next Sunday.

Cardinal Camillo Ruini, the vicar for Rome and president of the Italian Bishops' Conference, presided at the opening Mass on Sunday, and the Pope said that he was already with the participants in Spirit as the congress began. Organisers expect up to 200,000 people for the final two days of the event.

During the Pope's Sunday audience, he led the faithful for the first time in the Angelus. His previous Sunday appearances, since his election to the papacy on 20 April, had been held during the Easter season, when the Angelus is replaced by the Regina Caeli.
