Kidman seeks theological education

Australian Hollywood actor Nicole Kidman is said to be "returning to her Catholic roots" by way of tutoring in Old Testament with an academic from Pepperdine University in Malibu, California.

Contactmusic.com reports that the 37-year-old has employed Professor of Religion Dr Robert Cargill to teach her about theology and its connections to Middle Eastern Politics.

Dr Cargill confirmed: "Yes I'm teaching Nicole, but I make it general policy not to talk about it."

The website also says that Kidman - who left North Sydney's Monte Sant'Angelo college of the Sisters of Mercy at 16 to pursue her acting career - is planning to take a philosophy degree when she finishes the theology course.

In a feature on her Catholicism, the Philippine Daily Enquirer quotes Kidman's admission that Catholicism "guides her".

"I was raised a Catholic," she said. "Catholicism is a part of my life. Last Easter time was lovely because I was back with my family. That's the first time in a long while that I spent Easter with my huge extended Catholic family, with aunts and cousins from all over the place. Being a Catholic was so much a part of my childhood, that it still remains with me."

"I certainly have a strong belief," she continued. "I try to go to church regularly, and I try to go to confession."

On Pope John Paul II, Kidman commented: "Whether you agreed with him or not, it was admirable that in this world, he stood for issues and stuck by them."

Inspired by her faith and parents, whom she describes as having "very strong social conscience," the 37-year-old keeps herself involved with the Unicef. "I also do an enormous amount of fundraising for ovarian cancer," she stated. "My mother had breast cancer. If you're in a position like I'm in, it's your duty to try, in a small way, to help the world."

It was rumoured that Kidman's desire to bring up their children Catholic caused her marriage split with fellow actor and Scientologist Tom Cruise.
