Scholar says Jesus was conditioned by his environment

An Irish biblical scholar has said that a key to understanding Jesus lies in recognising that the way people think, and look at the world, is governed by where they were born and the their conditioning factors. reports that this is the thesis of Professor Sean Freyne of Trinity College Dublin, who was one of the keynote speakers at last weekend's annual meeting of the Irish Biblical Association in Dublin.

Professor Freyne spoke of the influence of space, geography and culture on Jesus' thinking.

"You got the feeling you were walking the roads of Galilee with Jesus," said Sr Mary O'Brien, biblical scholar and Editor of Intercom Magazine, who was present at the gathering.

Professor Freyne's thesis, which has been published in his recent book Jesus the Galilean, is that all people, including Jesus, are conditioned by their environment.

"This is an aspect of the life of Jesus that has not been explored before in the way that Prof. Freyne has done," said Sr O'Brien.
