Priest highlights police shootings as life issue

Jesuit Fr Peter Norden of the Victorian Criminal Justice Coalition is challenging the state's police force to act to protect human life, following the third police shooting death this year.

Fr Norden spoke out yesterday, following the sixth death in the space of just fourteen months at the hands of members of Victoria Police.

In Tuesday's killing of Mr Wally Kennedy, a regular Santa Claus to the local kids in Shepparton, in the state's north, resulted from police intervention in a domestic dispute. It follows the killing of Mohammed Chaouk in suburban Brooklyn only two weeks ago.

"No one suggests that the situations that police are called to respond to are easily resolved, but the worst outcome is one which results in the loss of human life," he said.
