Pope to come home for Holy Week
Papal spokesman Joaquin Navarro Valls confirmed yesterday that the Holy Father will be discharged from his Rome hospital in time for Holy Week, which begins one week from Sunday.
"For Holy Week the Pope will be in the Vatican," Dr Navarro-Valls said after meeting the Pope in his suite at the Gemelli Polyclinic, where he is recovering from throat surgery and a severe bout of flu.
Today's Sydney Daily Telegraph quotes from an AFP report that doctors had earlier discussed the 84-year-old Pope's state of health.
Since undergoing tracheotomy surgery within hours of being rushed to hospital, the Pope has confined his public appearances to non-speaking gestures from the hospital window. He has started speech and breathing therapy.
Looking alert and in reasonably good form, he repeatedly blessed the crowd on Wednesday under his 10th floor window at the Gemelli, in what was his first appearance in three days.
Three previous medical bulletins said the Holy Father was recovering well after surgery to ease acute breathing problems that forced his hospitalisation for the second time in a month.
The Vatican said on Tuesday that most ceremonies between Palm Sunday (20 March) and Easter Sunday a week later, would be led by cardinals. No decision has been made on whether the Pope will preside over a key Way of the Cross procession on Good Friday.
