Caritas says good networks helping Nias response
Caritas Australia director Jack de Groot has said that the international Caritas organisations' response to the Easter Monday Indonesian earthquake is being made easier by the presence of good Catholic networks.
"Fortunately, we have good networks within the island of Nias because Catholic parishes there are administered by the Archdiocese of Medan, which is located in Aceh where we already have staff working on tsunami relief," Caritas Australia National Director, Jack de Groot said in a statement released yesterday.
"This allows us to make contact immediately and means that we can set up infrastructure very quickly if needed," Mr de Groot said.
"Medical supplies and medical personnel are already being sent to Nias. Once the initial assessment is completed a decision will be made about exactly what other goods and services will be provided," he said.
Caritas Australia will accept donations for the survivors of the Indonesian earthquake, including the island of Nias which was the most severely affected.
However, Caritas Australia is not currently conducting an appeal in relation to the Indonesian Earthquake. A decision about this will be made in the next few days, as more information becomes available, Mr de Groot said.
An assessment of the situation in Nias, the island most affected by the Indonesian earthquake, was being conducted by a Caritas Australia representative yesterday.
