Rev Tim Costello to speak on 'healing community'
World Vision Australia Chief Executive, Baptist minister Rev Tim Costello, will present Australian Catholic University's 2005 Lenten Lecture, Building a Healing Community, in Melbourne tonight.
"Rev Costello is one of Australia's leading campaigners on social justice issues," said ACU National Vice-Chancellor, Professor Peter Sheehan AO. "The University is honoured to welcome Rev Costello to ACU National. Most recently he has been in the forefront of establishing a relief fund for the victims of the recent Asian tsunami disaster, which has to date raised in excess of $69 million."
Mr Costello will ask how we can build on this momentum and seize the opportunity that presents itself at this time, the first time in history where the possibility of making poverty history is within our grasp.
Through its work in many countries divided by conflict, inequality and poverty, World Vision has worked actively to build healing communities.
"Community is a concept that works at many levels, from the local neighbourhood or workplace level right through to the interaction between nation states at the international level," said Mr Costello.
The, which is free of charge and open to the public, will take place on ACU's Melbourne Campus (St Patrick's), at 8:00 pm.
The ACU National annual Lenten Lecture was introduced in 1999 and is the University's major public oration. It addresses the theme of theology in dialogue with Australian culture, while also contributing to the relationship between theology and other disciplines offered at the University, the Church and society in Australia.
Meanwhile the Jesuit Lenten Seminars, which are mid-way through a tour of mainland state capitals and Wollongong, move to Sydney tonight. Morag Fraser AM, Robert Fitzgerald AM, and Michael Kelly SJ, will address the topic 'Honesty Matters', at La Valla Hall, Marist College, 270 Miller Street, North Sydney, at 7:30 pm.
