Heritage listing to protect Sydney church
The City of Sydney Council is expected to approve the Sacred Heart Church in Darlinghurst for heritage listing next Monday, even though church leaders maintain it has little architectural merit.
The Sydney Morning Herald reports that approval means the site, owned by the University of Notre Dame, will be more difficult to redevelop.
Vice-chancellor Peter Tannock said the university plans to restore most of the church.
Last year the Church announced it wanted a university campus on the site, including a medical school where the church stands.
