Recovering Pope makes public appearance

Pope John Paul II yesterday waved to pilgrims after appearing at the window of his hospital room where he is recovering from flu and breathing difficulties.

The BBC reports tht he sounded hoarse as he gave the short final lines of the Angelus blessing.

It was his first public appearance since he was rushed to Rome's Gemelli hospital on Tuesday.

Crowds had massed for a glimpse of the 84-year-old pontiff and clapped after his appearance. Many others watched on large screens in St Peter's Square.

In a message read out on his behalf by an aide, he gave thanks for the prayers and support of pilgrims around the world and said he would continue to lead the Catholic Church as long as he was able.

"Even from here in the hospital, among other sick people to whom go my sincere best wishes, I continue to serve the Church and all humanity," he said.

On Saturday, Italian bishop Vincenzo Paglia said the he was "getting better and he's happy" after delivering a message of good wishes with three other bishops.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports that in North Sydney, the congregation at the Mary MacKillop Chapel in North Sydney, where the Pope prayed during his Australian visit in 1995, began Mass yesterday morning with a prayer of support from Josephite congregation leader, Sr Maria Casey.

"His link to us is very strong," Sr Casey told the congregation of about 350. "So today, in union with all the people of the world - not only Catholics but people of all faiths and no faith - who revere this man and respect him, we pray for his wellbeing."

On 19 January 1995, the Pope prayed inside the chapel at the tomb of Mother Mary MacKillop, the founder of the Sisters of St Joseph, before beatifying her at Randwick racecourse.
