Caritas Australia Tsunami Appeal now at $8m

The Caritas Australia Asia Earthquake Appeal topped $8 million yesterday. National Director Jack de Groot said the Catholic relief agency had been overwhelmed by the deep compassion shown by the Australian community.

Mr de Groot said, "Caritas has received unprecedented levels of support to assist those whose lives have been devastated and who are now facing the full implications of their tragedy."

He said the agency "is committed to working with the people affected by the earthquake and tsunami for many years to come." The key areas of emergency work being undertaken included health assistance, providing shelter, identification of missing people, prevention of disease and performing mass burials and funerals for the dead.

The media release linked below provides more detail of particular projects being assisted by Caritas and other Catholic relief agency partners in the wake of the Tsunami. It is estimated that the overall program being supported by Caritas in Indonesia will be $5 million.

The BBC is reporting as we go to press that the total death toll for the Tsunami has been revised upwards to more than 220,000 people. This is some 50,000 higher than the previous best estimates.
