Archbishop challenges Australians' selective goodwill

Adelaide's Archbishop Philip Wilson issued an Australia Day call for Australians to rethink their hopes and dreams for a nation currently suffering a "schizophrenia of goodwill".

"I think that Australia at present exhibits a kind of national schizophrenia in that we have the wonderful response of goodwill made to the victims of the tsunami waves and the local bushfires and yet at the same time we don't know how to respond properly to people who arrive on our own doorsteps looking for help," Archbishop Wilson said.

"We are a nation enjoying incredible prosperity at present and this should make us come more freely to the aid of others."

Archbishop Wilson's comments were seen as a veiled criticism of the community's apparent acceptance of the Federal Government's deportation to Afghanistan this month of the Bakhtiyari family after their unsuccessful five-year struggle to gain asylum in Australia. Centacare Director Dale West acted as guardian for most of the Bakhtiyari children after they were released from detention.

The editorial in The Australian newspaper today hit back at Archbishop Wilson's comments, arguing that he "missed the mark" in his criticism of Australia's "concern with the bona fides of those who come here as migrants or refugees".

Meanwhile Catholics on yesterday's Australia Day Honours List include National President of the St Vincent de Paul Society John Meahan and Sydney Catholic Education Office official Natalie McNamara, who were made members in the General Division of the Order of Australia. Others include Newcastle Parish Pastoral Council chair Dr Moira Gordon, who is also involved in the Commission for Australian Catholic Women, and Daughter of Charity Sr Pauline Flynn, who works with the homeless and vulnerable in Adelaide.
