Church celebrating today's 150th anniversary of Marian dogma

Pope John Paul II urged the faithful to make special preparation for today's feast of the Immaculate Conception, as the Church celebrates the 150th anniversary of the formal definition of the dogma.

Catholic World News reports that the Holy Father used his Angelus audience on Sunday to make the call.

He had already announced that, in spite of his physical infirmity, he will participate in the annual ceremony in which a statue of the Virgin Mary is crowned on 8 December, at the foot of the Spanish Steps in Rome. He encouraged the people attending his Sunday audience to "join [him] in this act of filial veneration of our heavenly mother."

"We are preparing to celebrate with intimate joy," the Pope remarked, adding that this year's observance of the holy day "takes on a special meaning" in of the 150th anniversary.

John Paul II went on to recount how in 1854, Blessed Pius IX proclaimed the dogma of the Immaculate Conception during a solemn Mass in the Vatican basilica.

Reiterating that dogmatic teaching, the Pope explained that "the blessed Virgin Mary, from the first moment of conception, was preserved free from any stain of original sin, through the grace of a special privilege from almighty God, because of the merits of Jesus Christ, the Saviour of mankind."
