ACU appoints prominent lay theologian

The Australian Catholic University has appointed Dr Neil Ormerod to the position of Professor of Theology and Head of the Sub-Faculty of Philosophy and Theology, to be based at its Strathfield Campus in Sydney.

"I am delighted to announce the appointment of Dr Ormerod to this key role," said ACU National Vice-Chancellor, Professor Peter Sheehan AO. "Dr Ormerod is an internationally renowned Catholic scholar with a high record of academic achievement and strong reputation."

For some years, Dr Ormerod has been at the Catholic Institute of Sydney, where he has held the position of Senior Lecturer in Systematic Theology and also Academic Secretary.

"The Sub-Faculty of Philosophy and Theology will benefit strongly from Dr Ormerod's 20 years of distinguished experience as a theologian. He will make a substantial contribution to the University and the further development of the Sub-Faculty," said Professor Sheehan.

Dr Ormerod has spoken at many national and international conferences and has had articles published in numerous refereed academic journals including Theological Studies, Irish Theological Quarterly and Heythrop Journal. In his previous role as Senior Lecturer in Systematic Theology, Dr Ormerod attracted a number of high quality research students, whose successful projects he supervised to completion.

Dr Ormerod has exercised high positions of academic and administrative leadership notably as Dean of Studies at both St Paul's National Seminary, Centre for Christian Spirituality and more recently in his roles at CIS. Through representing these colleges Dr Ormerod has served on various boards and committees of the Sydney College of Divinity. He is also President of the Australian Catholic Theological Association.

Dr Ormerod has received many awards including University Medal in Pure Mathematics, an Award for Academic Proficiency and Student Affairs and two Christian Book of the Year Awards. He is also well-recognised for his involvement in the community. In addition to academic writing he has been a regular contributor of letters and articles to the popular press, demonstrating a high commitment to social and cultural issues.

"I am really looking forward to the new challenges offered in this post. I want to contribute in whatever way I can to the promotion of a research culture in the Sub-Faculty. I am keen to explore the possibilities of inter-disciplinary studies, particularly in human sciences, within the Catholic environment of ACU National," said Dr Ormerod.
