ACU classified as "elite athlete friendly"

The Australian Catholic University has signed up to an Australian Institute of Sport program to support elite athletes at universities, with vice-chancellor Professor Peter Sheehan declaring that the policy "recognises the dignity of each individual, supports the holistic development of students, and provides appropriate levels of support for students in recognition of their diverse backgrounds and career aspirations".

"ACU National is committed to helping all students to achieve their academic and personal potential, and our Policy on Elite Athlete Support reflects our commitment to assist students, who are elite athletes, to combine their academic and elite sporting aspirations successfully at the highest level."

The University will work closely with relevant national, state and local sporting bodies and Athlete Career and Education (ACE) Advisors to provide flexible study options for individuals identified as "elite athletes" by relevant organisations.

ACU National's Elite Athlete Coordinator (EAC), Deputy Dean of Health Sciences, Associate Professor John Saunders, will advocate for elite athletes throughout the University, providing them with advice and guidance on course planning and other academic matters. Professor Saunders will liaise with course coordinators to arrange cross-institutional study and credit transfer arrangements when necessary, and to tailor timetabling, workloads, assessment deadlines, leave, and online and distance education delivery to fit in with elite athletes' training and competition commitments.

Among a wide range of other courses across its six campuses in Brisbane, North Sydney, Strathfield, Melbourne, Ballarat and Canberra, ACU National offers degrees in Exercise Science at its Melbourne Campus (St Patrick's) and Strathfield Campus (Mount Saint Mary).
