ACU to boost nursing

Australian Catholic University will strengthen its focus on nursing with the addition of 135 places in the Bachelor of Nursing program offered on the University's North Sydney Campus (MacKillop) in 2005.

"ACU National is one of Australia's leading universities in the field of nursing. The extra places available on the North Sydney Campus places the University in a strategic position to contribute significantly to the New South Wales health care system and the community by providing additional trained nurses," said ACU National Vice-Chancellor, Professor Peter Sheehan AO.

"Historically, ACU National has established a tradition of educating nurses, which dates back 150 years through its predecessor institutions. We are proud that through the receipt of these extra places we have been recognised for our long-term experience in providing quality nurse education," he said. "We have leading-edge nurse education facilities on our North Sydney Campus and are currently upgrading these to accommodate the increase of nursing students," said Professor Sheehan.

A statement released yesterday by the University says its nurses who "Qualify for Life" are taught in simulated nursing laboratories using the latest equipment. This includes technologically-advanced mannequins. They are placed in simulated wards, mimicking the real world of nursing," he said.

Students are also taught through the Virtual Health Environment, which incorporates traditional methods and strategy with technology, thereby giving students the opportunity to explore, practice and experience nursing before graduating. Students' assessments are based on specific patient scenarios using a dummy medical system, developed in close consultation with Registered Nurses at St Vincent's Hospital.

"Students are exposed to a teaching environment which offers a close relationship between student and lecturer and help is on hand at all times," said Professor Sheehan. "What stands out about the teaching methods in the School of Nursing at ACU National's North Sydney Campus is the enthusiasm that we see in our students to learn because they actually finish their first year feeling like a nurse."
