Commission supports action on insurance crisis

Brisbane's Catholic Justice and Peace Commission is supporting today's Day of Action organised by the Queensland Council of Social Service (QCOSS) to lobby State and Federal Governments for action on the crisis in public liability insurance.

The Commission is concerned that the worthwhile activity of many voluntary and funded community groups is being halted by high public liability costs.

Commission Executive Officer Peter Arndt said that many events, festivals and activities are not able to continue because of high insurance costs.

"This insurance crisis is stopping worthwhile activities like a Disability Expo in Gatton and the provision of bushwalking opportunities for disadvantaged youth in Deception Bay," Mr Arndt said.

"Despite some reforms by the Queensland Government, insurance premiums remain extremely high and many community groups cannot pay them or have to cut back on what they do to afford them," he said.

"While this is happening, insurance companies continue to make high profits," he said. "The Federal Government, which took action over medical insurance, has not done anything about public liability insurance," he said.

QCOSS is organising today's Day of Action. The Commission has sent information about the day to parishes and groups in the Archdiocese.

"We are encouraging Catholics to participate in the day of action and to continue to lobby their State and Federal Members for some action on this crisis. So much that is of great value to communities, especially in rural and regional areas is being delivered a death sentence by high public liability insurance costs," Mr Arndt said.

"The welfare of people generally is linked to vibrant community life and the lack of effective action on insurance is having a harmful effect on community welfare," he said.

"We are also very concerned that this crisis will impact on programmes which support the most disadvantaged and vulnerable people in local communities," he said.
