Pell calls Cologne "a journey on many levels"
Sydney's Cardinal George Pell has said the pilgrimage to the German city of Cologne for next yhear's World Youth Day next year will be a journey "on many levels" for young people.
The Catholic Weekly reports that he told a World Youth Day gathering in St Mary's Cathedral College hall last Sunday that "on one level it will be the physical journey and on another level it will be a spiritual journey."
"This is why you need to be genuinely open to ideas and people and continually searching for answers and the truth".
He told the young people not to expect five-star comfort, but that they should remain optimistic because "life is full of surprises".
The cardinal made the point that World Youth Day is for those who are firm in their faith, advising those with doubts not to attend. He acknowledged the ridicule young people sometimes face when others discover they are religious.
"You don't need to feel any embarrassment about being religious and saying 'yes' to praying publicly," he said.
