ACU launches research centre for physical activity

The Australian Catholic University Faculty of Health Sciences has established a Centre of Physical Activity Across the Lifespan (CoPAAL) at campuses in Sydney and Melbourne.

CoPAAL is a research initiative within ACU National's School of Exercise Science in NSW and Victoria. The launch took place in Sydney earlier this month.

"The centre, based on the North Sydney Campus (MacKillop) and Melbourne Campus (St Patrick's), aims to assist and promote excellence in ethical research, maximising research opportunities for staff and postgraduate students in projects relating to physical activity across the lifespan," said CoPAAL's inaugural Director, Associate Professor Geraldine Naughton.

"The research projects will address physical activity health issues from children through to older adults."

Present at the launch was guest speaker Ms Debbie Watson, a member of the Sydney 2000 Olympic's Gold Medal Women's Water Polo team and ACU National Exercise Science graduate. In her speech, Ms Watson reflected on the value of physical activity in all age groups.

"The opening of CoPAAL is a great leap forward for ACU National in its research of the benefits of physical activity for all," said Ms Watson.

"It is extremely important that physical activity becomes a daily and fun activity for the young, the old and for those of us in between."

"There are numerous physical, emotional and sociological benefits associated with sport and physical exercise. People involved in moderate levels of exercise have a lower mortality rate and a lower incidence of a number of diseases and conditions than those who are physically inactive," said Ms Watson.

"Physical activity and sport can contribute to positive outcomes, like reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, better stress management, alleviation of depression and anxiety, and improved self-esteem," she said. "Regular exercising decreases the chance of obesity and lowers the risk of many physical illnesses."

ACU National offers a Bachelor of Exercise Science and a Master of Exercise Science (Research).
