Papal envoy demands action on Darfur

Archbishop Josef Cordes, speaking from Sudan where he is acting as the Pope's personal envoy to the Darfur region, has said that the war in Sudan "has been overlooked and ignored in public opinion for too long".

Catholic World News reports that Archbishop Cordes, president of the Pontifical Council Cor Unum, issued his statement from Khartoum after visiting refugee camps in the Darfur region.

He reported that thousands of people from Darfur "have been forced to flee and live in conditions unworthy of man" because of the raids on villages in the region.

International leaders, the archbishop continued, "have a duty to look beyond their own interests" to help the people of Darfur escape from their misery.

A humanitarian crisis has developed in the western region after Arabic tribes, reportedly backed by the Khartoum government, conducted bloody raids on native African villages.

Archbishop Cordes issued his statement after concelebrating Sunday mass in Khartoum with Cardinal Gabriel Zubeir Wako and with Archbishop Dominique Mamberti, the apostolic nuncio to Sudan.
