ACU expands teacher education to Sandhurst Diocese
Australian Catholic University's Graduate Diploma of Education (Secondary), was officially launched on Friday at Shepparton in northern Victoria.
ACU National will offer the Graduate Diploma at the city's Notre Dame College from 2005.
The course was officially launched on Friday afternoon by ACU National Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic Affairs), Professor Gabrielle McMullen jointly with Bishop Joseph Grech, Bishop of Sandhurst, Mr Denis Higgins, Director, Catholic Education Office Sandhurst and Mr Peter White, Principal, Notre Dame College.
The initiative is a partnership initiative between ACU National, Notre Dame College and the Catholic Education Office, Sandhurst.
"ACU National's Strategic Plan calls for a commitment to rural and regional education, principles of access and equity, flexible delivery of programs, community engagement, and collaborative partnerships," said Professor McMullen.
"This initiative in Shepparton embraces all these elements in a unique way, preparing teachers for Catholic (and other) secondary schools within the Diocese of Sandhurst."
The program for Shepparton has been specifically designed to suit the work and study requirements of regional students, and to incorporate expertise from the region, in conjunction with ACU National staff.
"ACU National had made a commitment to relocate some of its existing Commonwealth-supported places to Shepparton to allow the introduction of this Graduate Diploma," said Professor McMullen. "However, the higher education reforms enabled ACU National to apply for new places for this initiative and the University was successful in its application, gaining 20 new places for secondary teacher education in Shepparton."
The Graduate Diploma of Education (Secondary) is currently offered at ACU National's Ballarat Campus (Aquinas), Melbourne Campus (St Patrick's) and Strathfield Campus (Mount Saint Mary) and from 2005 will
also be offered at the Canberra Campus (Signadou).
