Pope John Paul declares Year of the Eucharist
During yesterday's celebration of the Feast of Corpus Christi, Pope John Paul yesterday announced that October 2004 to October 2005 would be a special Year of the Eucharist.
Catholic World News reports that the announcement came as he presided over the Mass of Corpus Christi in the square of the Basilica of St John Lateran before leading the Eucharistic procession toward the Basilica of St Mary Major.
The Feast of Corpus Christi will be observed in Australian churches on Sunday.
"I am happy to announce a special year of the Eucharist," the Pope told the congregation during his homily, which he read himself in its entirety. "It will begin with the World Eucharist Congress, from 10 to 17 October, in Guadalajara, Mexico."
"The Church lives by the Eucharist and knows that this truth is not expressed only in a daily experience of faith, but contains in a synthetic fashion the kernel of the mystery which she is herself," he said, pointing out that he had devoted his first encyclical of the new millennium to the Eucharist.
The Holy Father's 14th encyclical, Ecclesia de Eucharistia, a reflection on the eucharistic mystery and its relationship to the Church, was published on April 16, 2003. In it he stressed that the Church cannot "realise her own vocation without cultivating a steadfast relationship with the Eucharist."
