Honorary doctorate for diva Joan Carden
The Australian Catholic University awarded an Honorary Doctorate to Miss Joan Carden AO OBE at a graduation ceremony at the Sydney Town Hall last week.
"In presenting Miss Carden with an Honorary Doctorate, ACU National recognises the tremendous service she has given to the performing arts during her long and distinguished career," said ACU National, Vice-Chancellor, Professor Peter Sheehan AO.
"Joan Carden is one of Australia's greatest sopranos, a diva of extraordinary stature. She has been at the pinnacle of her profession for more than three decades and has been one of Australia's great leaders and pioneers of the arts, particularly opera," said Professor Sheehan.
Miss Carden presented the Occasional Address at the morning ceremony and the Executive Director of Schools, Catholic Education Office, Br Kelvin Canavan FMS AM addressed Faculty of Education graduates at the evening ceremony.
More than 900 ACU National graduands from the University's North Sydney and Strathfield campuses received their award at two ceremonies at the Sydney Town Hall on 15 April, with graduands from the Faculties of Arts and Sciences and Health Sciences attending the morning ceremony and graduands from the Faculty of Education attending the evening ceremony.
