Sydney education office helps Solomons rebuild
The Sydney archdiocesan Catholic Education Office has linked with the Gizo diocese in the Solomon Islands in a bid to put that beleaguered country's Catholic education system back on its feet.
And the first step has been to fund and construct an education resource centre in the diocese (pictured) along with assistance from Marist Asia Pacific Solidarity and AusAid, the Australian Government's overseas aid agency.
The Sydney Catholic Education Office has provided curriculum software on CD and given permission for it to be edited to suit local conditions. The centre also offers service to schools and teachers beyond the Catholic community.
"Collaboration, dedication and networking have made this possible," said Gizo auxiliary Bishop Chris Cardone. "The resource building will be used for teachers' workshops and courses."
During the recent civil unrest many students stopped attending school and many teachers left their postings. Some schools were significantly damaged and lost all their instructional materials.
