Ordination of former Longreach rouseabout

A 36 year old Western Queensland man was ordained a deacon in Longreach on Wednesday evening, and is expected to be ordained as a priest later this year.

ABC local radio reports that it was the first Catholic ordination in Longreach for more than 30 years. The ceremony took place in St Brigid's Church (pictured).

Born and raised north-west of Longreach, Matthew Maloney worked as a contractor, a wool classer, rouseabout and stock and station agent before deciding to enter the priesthood.

"The church and myself I see as reaching out to people and saying, 'God is important in their lives'," he told the ABC.

"The church has a role to bring people together in unity, to bring the community together and celebrate, celebrate the good things, so that peace can reign in people's hearts, their lives and their families."
