Pope meets with 'Passion' star Caviezel
On Monday Pope John Paul II met with Jim Caviezel, who plays Jesus in Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ.
According to Vatican spokesman Fr Ciro Benedettini, the "devout" Catholic actor had a brief conversation with the Holy Father, who then gave him a blessing.
The ANSA news agency said Caviezel arrived in Rome on Saturday, and attended a private screening of his film with the Legionaries of Christ. Caviezel's wife also attended the meeting with the pope.
The Gibson dramatisation of Christ's final hours earned $A358 million in the United States and Canada after 19 days in cinemas, according to studio estimates released at the weekend. Takings in Australia have more than doubled the distributors' expectations.
