New Zealand Mercy Congegations merging
Four Congregations of the Sisters of Mercy in New Zealand have begun the process of merging, in order to maximise the vitality of the Mercy presence in the country.
The Congregations involved are those of Aotearoa, Christchurch, Dunedin and Wellington.
Mercy Federation Secretary Sr Agnes Browne said the process of unification will begin in June with an Assembly of the Congregations.
"Our hope", she told the Rome-based Vidimus Dominum news service, "is that every Sister can personally get involved in this process and can participate in reaching the common objective".
"Rooted in the Gospel and in the prophetic vision of Catherine McAuley", says a statement, "the Sisters of Mercy of New Zealand try to respond to local needs in the areas of education, health care and social services."
"Committed to a life of prayer, community, and service, the Sisters think globally and work locally, living in the hope that their work may be a presence of justice and compassion in our world".
Following a preparatory meeting last month, the Sisters issued a statement asserting that they "will be ready to proceed with the compilation of [their] petition for the suppression of our four Congregations and the establishment of a new Congregation as Sisters of Mercy of Aotearoa New Zealand."
