Surprise retirement of Anglican Primate of Australia
For the benefit of overseas readers of CathNews the biggest religious story in Australia today has been the surprise announcement of the early retirement of the Anglican Primate of Australia, Archbishop Peter Carnley.
Archbishop Carnley has himself announced his early retirement which will take place in July next year. Most of the media are carrying reports of the announcement today but without much detailed comment. There has not yet been any comment from Roman Catholic commentators or Church leaders. Perhaps the best comment on the implications so far has been written by James Murray the religious affairs writer the national newspaper, The Australian.
