Christmas tree to appear in St Peter's Square today

The Vatican Christmas tree, a 30 metre spruce from the Italian Alps, will arrive in St Peter's Square today.

Each year the Vatican accepts a Christmas tree as a gift from a different European region. This year's tree comes from the Italian province of Valle d'Aosta, where Pope John Paul II has frequently spent summer vacations in past years.

During the Pope's regular weekly audience next Wednesday, a group of officials from Valle d'Aosta will be on hand for the formal presentation of the tree. Later that day. Cardinal Edmund Szoka will officiate at a tree-lighting ceremony.
